Congratulations to my UCLA Classics colleagues, Lorenzo Garcia and Chris Eckerman, who were hooded a couple of weeks ago.

I would’ve been there with you, but I had to go to a conference. But I was there in spirit via webcast. May our paths cross again and soon! (APA 2008 in Chicago? When and where, by the way, the LSA is meeting.)
I also want to wish Prof. Michael Haslam all the best in emeritude. The class on Greek and Latin meter I took with him in winter 2001 is one of my favorites. And it was an honor and pleasure to have worked with him on my dissertation. He asked difficult questions about textual issues and metrics I continue to think about, keeping the work on firmer ground, and he was so generous with encouraging words.
As for my own news: I had an overall successful first year in the profession. I am grateful for the support, mentoring, and friendship of my fellow linguists and classicists at Santa Cruz. I’m fortunate to be continuing as a lecturer for UCSC Literature and Language, and next year I’m set to teach Latin 1, Catullus and Horace, Cicero’s and Pliny’s Letters, and comparative mythology and poetics via Indo-European literature in translation. A revised version of my dissertation was accepted for publication in the Innsbrucker Beiträge zur Sprachwissenschaft series, bits of which have gotten well-received airings at conferences and workshops this year.
And now, Chris and Lorenzo, let our first guilt-free relaxing summer in many years commence!
